VACTE Cosmetology Program Overview

VACTE Cosmetology is excited to begin its second year of the program! This year, we proudly welcome 25 returning second-year students who will be preparing to sit for their Arizona Board of Cosmetology & Barber 1000-Hour Hairstyling Certification. These advanced students are now accepting clients and available for appointments. Please see the flyer for additional details.

In addition, VACTE welcomes 20 new junior students beginning their first year in the Cosmetology Program. This two-year program is designed for students during their 11th and 12th grade years and provides the training necessary to pursue state certification in their second year.

First-Year Curriculum

Students are introduced to the foundational and advanced skills of cosmetology, including:

  • Hair structure, growth, and scalp analysis

  • Proper shampooing, conditioning, and rinsing techniques

  • Scalp treatments for a variety of conditions

  • Professional communication, safety, sanitation, and industry standards

  • History of cosmetology (past and present)

Students receive hands-on experience through manikin demonstrations, learning the basics of:

  • Hair design

  • Finger waving and pin curls

  • Hairstyling tools and techniques

The course also introduces basic haircutting, focusing on:

  • Proper tool use

  • Body positioning and hand elevation

  • Repetitive practice to meet industry standards

Advanced Skills & Specialized Training

As students progress, they expand their knowledge and practical skills in:

  • Wigs, hair extensions, braids, and weaves

  • Wig measurement and fitting

  • Chemical texturizing and hair relaxing (using mock and actual chemicals on manikins)

  • Hair color fundamentals, including color chemistry, consultation techniques, and use of the color wheel

Second-Year & Advanced Training

Second-year coursework reinforces previously learned skills while introducing advanced techniques such as:

  • Texturizing, razor cutting, and advanced style design

  • Chemical services that alter hair structure

  • In-depth hair color theory and application

Students learn to confidently consult, recommend, and deliver professional hair color and cutting services tailored to all hair types, incorporating personalized style elements into each service.


Program Cost: $850 (covers both years)
Credits Earned: 3 school credits per year
