FFA Students Plan for New School Year

Mingus Union High School Agricultural Education /FFA Organization recently held their annual Ice Cream Social and Pie Sale. Several area businesses and individuals kept the bidding lively; the event raised $2,500 for FFA.

Students will use the funds raised by the auction to attend various conferences and competitions, including the National Leadership Conference held in Kentucky each year. At the National Conference, the students are challenged to “Learn, Lead and Succeed” according to first-year Agricultural Education instructor, Justin Bereton.

Bereton also noted that the students learn a great deal about properly handling a meeting. The FFA Officer Team was in charge of the business portion of the fund-raiser and, according to Bereton, “They run the meetings with that level of professionalism during the whole year. The officer team is filled with take charge individuals.”

FFA, a Career and Technical Education student organization (CTSO) is among those assisted by funding from Valley Academy for Career and Technology Education (VACTE) in its support of Career and Technical Education in area schools.

Bereton, along with Heather Mulcaire, Ag Instructor and FFA Co-Advisor and Kim Fulps, classroom aide, supervised the students as they went through their paces during the event. “FFA at MUHS has some great events and I hope to continue building on that, says Berenton. “As evidenced by this auction, we also have great community support and outstanding student involvement.”

Mulcaire noted that first year FFA students will attend a Leadership Camp Workshop in Happy Jack at the end of September. She said they will learn such skills as team building using a modified ropes course and will also complete supervised projects. “Many of the first year FFA students are freshmen,” said Mulcaire, “but students become active in FFA at different times, so we also have sophomores and juniors going to Leadership Camp.”

The Ag Program is also active at Camp Verde High School where new Ag teacher, Verne Johnson has joined the team this year.
